John F. Hess of Hillsboro, Ohio passed away after a three-year battle with cancer.
In September 2023, John was told he had terminal cancer with less than six months to live. John said, "not yet! I still have a lot of hunting, fishing, things to do and family to see".
He kept his promise to himself. Just three weeks ago he was in his deer stand determined to do things his way.
John was born on March 13, 1945 and is preceded in death by his parents, Frank, Lavina (Rinear) and Mary (Amis) Hess, his brother Frank Jr., sister Shirley and stepbrother Chester Bowling. Also gone way too soon is his stepson Robert aka Bobby Murray and grandson Danny Wilson. We are certain that John was greeted well.
John is survived by his wife Deborah (Perkins) Hess of 45 years, his brother Morgan (Linda) Hess, his sister Susan (Bruce) Burgess, stepbrother Andrew (Donna) Bowling; two sons John (Kristi) Hess Jr. and Kevin (Dianna) Hess; grandchildren Heather (Connor) Jackson, Johnny (Kelly) Hess and Danielle (Nate) Miller. John was also blessed with six great grandchildren, Cameron, Ava, Bo, Chevelle, Jett and Jase.
John graduated from Little Miami in 1965 and was a proud U.S. Army veteran serving an extended term in Germany. John was very active in the South Central Chapter of the NWTF and helped reintroduce the wild turkey back into the state of Ohio. He was always available to teach people about the "ways of the woods and waters". He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gatherer of our Woodland edibles. John was also an active member of the Amvets, Post #61. John was always willing to help, provide suggestions and support his friends with any project.
John's family, extended family and many wonderful friends were blessed to know and be with him. All of us will miss him tremendously. Fly high John!
The family will have a "Celebration of Life" for John at a later date with military rites conducted by the Highland County Honor Guard.
Thompson Funeral Home has the honor of serving the family.
