Carol Lee Gorby, age 83, of Peebles, Ohio passed peacefully Aptil 24, 2026, with family at her side. She was born September 24, 1942, in Dayton, Ohio to James and Evelyn (Leiby) Lewis.
Besides Carol's parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dwain Gorby and her sister, Nancy Lewis. She is survived by her sister, Sharon Lewis, her children, Jeff (Nancy) Laymon, Tim Laymon, Shelly Eubank, her step-sons, Dwain and Ron Gorby and families, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Carol was a wonderful and loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Mother-in-law, Daughter-In-Law, Wife and Friend who cherished every moment spent with the ones she loved. From her famous Iron Pot "Burgoo/Stone Soup" gatherings on the farm, to the family Christmas celebrations at Deer Creek State Park Lodge, she loved bonding with her family and friends.
Carol joined the Beta Sigma Phi International, Dayton Chapter, at 20 years of age and remained a member until her passing. During her 63 - year tenure, she held a multitude of leadership positions within the organization, as well as leading many service initiatives. Her involvement in Sorority where she formed meaningful lifelong friendships. Once she settled in Peebles, her love for gardening prompted her to join the Hillsboro Garden Club, connected to the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, where she served a term as Regional President, Regional 16. Through the Garden Club she was able to put her artistic talents to work! She entered floral art designs annually in the Highland County Fair, winning countless 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons including numerous People's Choice, Best of Show and Judges Choice awards!
Carol's sharp secretarial, organizational and administrative talents made her an asset at any company where she was employed. After graduating from Belmont High School she worked in the office at Miami Valley Hospital. Her career at E,F. MacDonald/Carlson Marketing Group (Dayton) as a corporate travel agent, offered her the chance to travel the world! Eventually, Carol retired from the Montgomery County Sheriff's office (Dayton).
After retirement, Carol and Dwain settled in Highland County where they were married, built a home, started a beef operation and raised chickens. Family was always welcome, encouraged to come as often as possible, as they always made visits fun and adventurous. The first time each Grandchild got to drive the Gator on the farm was a thrill! Carol and Dwain were instrumental in settling an Amish Community there and, with that, they became their "Englishman" and developed a valued friendship with many families.
Carol had a real zest for life! In addition to her love for family and fun, her other interest included; sewing, tole painting, basket weaving, hatching chicks, canning, cheese making, reading and creative writing. She touched so many lives with her passion for life and her sunny disposition. This wonderful lady will surely be missed by her family and countless friends.
To honor Carol's memory, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Remembrances can be made in the form of contributions to Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, Ohio's Hospice of Wilmington or the Susan G. Koman (Breast Cancer Research). Thank you.
